The smell of fresh peaches hung in the air as I nervously offered Zach, the cute guy browsing organic tomatoes, a sample, my heart pounding because, as a gay man, I knew the odds of rejection were high, even in our supposedly progressive LGBT community. He smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that eased my anxiety, and as we talked about the farm’s practices and his favorite ways to use basil, I realized I was falling for him, but terrified he wouldn’t feel the same. Weeks later, holding hands under a sky full of stars after our first official date, all the anxieties of the farmer’s market faded, replaced by the electric certainty that this beautiful, unexpected romance was something real, something lasting.
